Fill in the Blank
- The (ten/twenty/thirty/forty)-foot-thick walls of the Citadel of Tiryns are a sharp contrast to the (open/closed) Cretan palaces, revealing their defensive character. These massive fortification walls were built of (slabs of slate and brick./unhewn or roughly dressed stone./wooden beams.) They were called Cyclopean by later Greeks, who believed them to have been built by a mythical race of giants. Unlike the (planned/unplanned) layout of Cretan palaces, the Mycenaeans used (clear and simple/elaborate) arrangements of units. The megaron, a (two/three/four)-chambered structure at the center of the design and the life of the citadel, foreshadows the classical temples of Greece. The megaron was (square/circular/rectangular) with a central hearth and four columns supporting the roof. It was used as a hall of state.
- Rather than the traditional tombs, fortresses or temples, building in Crete emphasized (dwellings for farmers./palaces for the king./pyramids.) In fact, the lack of fortification on Crete is significant. Other Helladic and Cycladic areas were heavily fortified. This is a tribute to (strong-handed rulers./weak enemies./the powerful Cretan navies.) The Middle Minoan period is marked by these old palaces and dates around (2800 B.C./2000 B.C./1800 B.C.) These old palaces, however, were destroyed around 1700 B.C., probably by one of the frequent (earthquakes/fires/floods) that strike that part of the Mediterranean.
